Gran Quivira is a very large ruin of an old pueblo of the Tompiro indians, Inhabited between 1300 and 1670 AD. Approximately 90 miles north west by road from Ruidoso, it makes an interesting and educational "day trip". Managed by the National Park Service, it is one of three pueblo ruins in the Salinas National Monument system. (The other two sites are not far away and all can be visited in the same day.)

Artist's conception of how the Pueblo looked 430 years ago
The monument has a visitor's center with educational programs, restroom and picnic facilities. There are some handicap facilities, but they are not extensive. Most people going beyond the visitors center should be prepared for a "casual" half-mile hike to actually enter the ruins.
There are no gas stations, stores or other commercial facilities nearby. Carrizozo 50 miles to the south, Corona 30 miles to the east and Mountainaire 26 miles to the North are the nearest places for food, gas, lodging etc.
It can get pretty cold and pretty hot there (sometimes in the same day) so dress appropriately. (I highly recommend bringing a hat, a wind breaker , drinks and a snack no matter what the weather is.).
Keep your eyes open for Antelope on the way in and out- There are a lot in the area.
While the monument is supposed to be open EVERY day, and at the time of this writing, there is no admission charge, it wouldn't hurt to call before you leave to make certain.
