MERCHANT MARINE CEMETERY
Yes, amazingly there is a National Merchant Marine facility near Ruidoso - 800 miles from the nearest navigable waterway!  The site is located a little north of the New Ruidoso Airport, about half way between there and Ft. Stanton, which is another historic place.

BILLY THE KID / LINCOLN
The whole town of Lincoln, NM is essentially a museum, But there are a couple of good museums there- The Lincoln County Courthouse from which Billy The Kid made his famous escape.  At the Visitors Center & Museum, you might be lucky to make the acquaintance of a Mr. Drew Gomber, a  "Western" historian of some repute, and a great writer / storyteller.
