CAPITAN is the home of the "SMOKEY THE BEAR MUSEUM" which celebrates and chronicles the life of that Icon of American Forestry, Smokey the Bear, who was found near the town about 50 years ago.
A small town about 20 miles north of Ruidoso, Capitan serves as a headquarters for area ranches, and as a "bedroom community" for Ruidoso with its somewhat lower (but still rapidly increasing) real estate prices.
