CAPITAN
is the home of the "SMOKEY THE BEAR MUSEUM"
which celebrates and chronicles the life of that Icon of American Forestry,
Smokey the Bear, who was found near the town about 50 years ago. A small
town about 20 miles north of Ruidoso, Capitan serves as a headquarters for area
ranches, and as a "bedroom community" for Ruidoso with it's somewhat
lower (but still rapidly increasing) real estate prices.
CARRIZOZO Is the County Seat of Lincoln County, approximately 35 miles Northwest of Ruidoso. A few miles to the west of Carrizozo is the "Valley of Fires" one of the most recent lava flows in the continental U.S. North and east of Carrizozo is the old mining boom town of White Oaks.
CLOUDCROFT is another mountain resort town, about 40 miles to the south west of Ruidoso. Actually in Otero County, about 19 miles east of Alamogordo.
LINCOLN
Is basically a living museum- Think Billy the Kid, Pat
Garrett, Lincoln County War etc. A really neat place to visit;
approximately 15 miles south east of Capitan, 45 miles from Ruidoso.
NOGAL Is a small rural community north west of Ruidoso, about half way to Carrizozo.
CORONA
Is at the extreme northern end of Lincoln County. It
is a small, "lazy" community that is mostly a "headquarters"
for area ranchers, and a refueling spot for travelers coming from or going to
Albuquerque "the back way". The major points of interest in the
area are the Gallinas Mountains and the Gran
Quivira Ruins.
