Air view of Northern Ruidoso from about 1958. Main "manmade"
feature seen here it the old Ruidoso Airport, which was relocated in the 1990s
because the old airport was very difficult to land at due to terrain.
Same photo as above, colorized to show current features.
Both of these are large files- (about 200K each) so if you
click , please be patient- They will take a while to download.
The fire lookout tower near "midtown" Ruidoso.
Here is why we need lookout towers!
Ditto.
Please be careful with fire in the Ruidoso area. (and everywhere
else.) This fire from May 1999 was caused by a shorted power line, but
several forest fires a year in Ruidoso are caused by carelessly tossed
cigarettes and by campfires that are not properly attended or extinguished.
Mistletoe- An interesting looking parasite that is attacking some
sections of the forest around Ruidoso. I'm not sure if it is related to
the kind of mistletoe that we normally associate with Christmas and
Kissing.-

Bet you have never seen a Nativity Scene set in a Tipi. (Teepee to you folks
that aren't that familiar with the West)
The following two photos were taken by me through the the
windshield as I was driving west on Highway 70 from Ruidoso, so please excuse
the poor quality.
White Sands National Monument backed by the Organ Mountains in the
distance. This photo was shot between Mescalero and Tularosa- About 30
miles to the White Sands.
Organ Mountains This was shot about 60 miles west of Ruidoso, about 25 miles
from the rugged mountain range that crops up between the southern part of the
White Sands Missile Range and Las Cruces, NM.
